JumpStart is a national public health campaign calling on the UK Government to mandate the inclusion of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all new vehicles sold in the UK. More than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK each year, 80% of which occur in or near the home, with a survival rate of less than one in ten. The JumpStart campaign argues that the 37 million vehicles already on UK roads represent a practical and scalable opportunity to improve defibrillator access nationwide.
The proposal, which is philanthropically funded by Jonathan Harris CBE, has the support of parliamentarians across both Houses of Parliament and 74% of the British public. Legislation to give effect to the proposal has been drafted by Mishcon de Reya LLP. The campaign welcomes support from individuals and organisations who share its objective of improving access to defibrillators and reducing deaths from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
